How to Rescue a Cat from a Tree!

Updated: Nov 17, 2022

If you have a kitty stuck in a tree here are a few steps that can help!

What you'll need:

A backpack

A harness

Two lengths of climbing rope. One rope should be about 15 feet long. The other needs to be

least 50 feet long.

A pillowcase

  1. Don't panic! Cats are okay for about three days without being in serious danger as long as they don't have any underlying health conditions. After three days it's a good idea to get them down because they can be in danger from dehydration. Also, cats can fall from any height and they are usually okay! They have an amazing ability to move in the air and create more air resistance so they can land without breaking bones. They can even fall from space theoretically. (Don't try this at home)

  2. Put some food and water in the tree if you can.

  3. Lean a ladder against the tree and go up and call the cat. Use their name and meow to them. It sounds silly, but cats respond to this. Using the short rope secure yourself to a branch strong enough to hold you.

  4. If the cat does come to you, don't grab at it. Calmly talk to them and try to pet them.

  5. If you can pet them, slowly reach into your bag and get the pillowcase. Put your hand inside the pillowcase and then scruff the cat at the back of the neck. Flip the pillowcase around the cat and then hold the pillowcase with the hole side up so the cat has no choice to go down into the pillowcase in order to turn around to get out. Close the opening of the pillowcase. Put the pillowcase into your backpack and climb down the ladder or rappel out of the tree.

If this doesn't work for some reason, call the professionals at Boulder Family Tree Service. If we can come rescue the cat ourselves we will, if you're outside of our service area we can probably find someone to help! (661) 599-6766
